Proper maintenance is very important to keep the house in a good condition. Setting up a check-up schedule is a good idea to start with, be it a weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on the subject ( room check up, pipe leaks, house paint, etc) minor or major renovations can be easily planned out.
Investing in some tools needed like a sturdy step stool which is very essential in fixing up things on hard to reach areas like ceiling or cutting out on tall trees in the garden (just like what DH has been long complaining about 
) is important for ease and convenience. This is also helpful to keep these things readily available when the need arise.
